Most Anti-Wrinkle Actives Fight the Symptoms. This One Clears Out the Root Cause.

1 September 2026

For years, anti-wrinkle formulation has followed the same playbook: inhibit the enzymes that break down collagen (MMPs), and stimulate fibroblasts to make more of it. It works, to a point — but it treats wrinkle formation as a collagen-supply problem. Newer aging research points to something further upstream: as skin ages, fibroblasts accumulate damaged, dysfunctional mitochondria that lose membrane potential and ATP output. A cell running on impaired mitochondria simply can't sustain healthy collagen synthesis, no matter how many downstream signals you throw at it.

This is where mitophagy comes in — the selective autophagy pathway that clears out damaged mitochondria so cells can replace them with functional ones. It's the same biology behind the 2016 Nobel Prize-winning autophagy research that now underpins much of the cellular longevity science conversation. Skincare is only just starting to catch up: most actives on the market still work exclusively on the MMP/collagen axis and leave the mitochondrial damage untouched.

WRINKLEZERO®, a Korean biotech active from TEN, is built around this mitophagy mechanism directly. It's a blend of three natural extracts — Blueberry (Vaccinium Angustifolium Fruit Extract), Broccoli (Brassica Oleracea Italica Extract), and Artichoke (Cynara Scolymus Leaf Extract) in an Aqua base — formulated to accelerate mitophagy in dermal fibroblasts at a recommended use level of 2%. A patent application is in progress.

Mechanism

In vitro testing (Fis1 Gene Transfection Assay and Parkin protein Assay) confirms that WRINKLEZERO® accelerates mitophagy to clear damaged mitochondria in fibroblasts. Parkin protein promotes the autophagic degradation of impaired mitochondria, which in turn restores membrane potential and ATP production in the cell. With functional mitochondria restored, the downstream effects follow: inhibition of cellular senescence, inhibition of MMP1 and MMP3 synthesis, and increased synthesis of Type I collagen.

Clinical Data

Per the supplier's in-vitro and clinical testing, WRINKLEZERO® showed fast and clear results within 4 weeks, tracked across five wrinkle zones — forehead wrinkle, glabella wrinkle, eye wrinkles, under-eye wrinkles, and nasolabial fold — and evaluated for firming effect, anti-wrinkle effect, and lifting effect. The active was non-irritating over 24 hours and is positioned as gentle and safe for daily anti-aging use.

Why It Matters for Formulators

Most anti-wrinkle claims on the market are really collagen-synthesis claims wearing an anti-aging label. WRINKLEZERO® gives formulators a genuinely different mechanism to build a claim around — one grounded in the same mitochondrial-health science driving the broader longevity trend — without asking them to give up the MMP-inhibition and collagen-synthesis benefits they already rely on.
