Reduce Harm to The Environment, Go Green With Your Car Shampoo

December 14, 2020

Latest Trend in Korea’s Automotive Cleaning Industry

Surfactants are widely used in home care, personal care and automotive cleaning agents. As organic pollutants, their toxicities have drawn extensive attention. In efforts of reducing the impact of the automotive cleaning industry on the environment, there is an emerging trend of replacing anionic surfactants with non-ionic surfactants in car shampoos. Environmentally friendly and biodegradable non-ionic surfactants are highly recommended to be used by car shampoo manufacturers by the government.

Introduction to Car Shampoo

In Korea, there are 3 main types of car shampoo:

  1. Automatic car shampoo
    • Low viscosity
  2. Manual car shampoo
    • High viscosity
  3. Bubble car wash shampoo
    • Used as a spray with foam gun. Low viscosity and requires very dense and sticky foam

Car washing can pose threats to the environment as it involves the use of chemicals and generates potentially toxic wastewater effluents. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, these chemicals may get released to the environment during disposal. By choosing green alternatives, we can help to reduce the disruption of our ecosystems as these green surfactants degrade themselves into harmless byproducts.

What are Korean Car Shampoo Manufacturers Using?

As this trend arises, many car shampoo manufacturers turn to alternatives such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) and Amine Oxide (AO). However, car shampoos produced using these surfactants have reduced efficiency. They are harder to rinse off, have lower degreasing properties and may leave watermarks on our vehicles.

These pain points have deterred other manufacturers from using nonionic surfactants for the production of car shampoos.

Our Solution

We will recommend that car shampoo manufacturers include alkylpolyglucosides (APG) in their car shampoos to improve its efficacy.
