The Impact of Pollutants on Skin and How to Protect It

With the drastic climate change, pollution has been one of the HOT topics in Asia. Out of the world’s 100 most polluted cities, 99 cities are in Asia. Furthermore, Jakarta, Hanoi, Thailand and Philippines are ranked in the top 10 cities with the worst air quality.

As pollutants are 20 times smaller than skin pores, it can penetrate deeper into the skin layers and eventually damage skin. The potential harms that can be caused include:

  • Dry Skin
  • Higher sebum secretion rate
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Loss of firmness due to insufficient hydration
  • Skin Inflammation when particles penetrate into our skin

So how can we overcome the challenges faced by our skin?

Maha is capable of providing oil-based chemicals that can protect skin from pollutants. Lumorol and Sebumol series are respectively primary surfactant and emulsifier series that are mainly being used for wash off applications.

The mechanisms of these series to protect the skin from pollutants include the following:

  1. Remove Pollutants from Skin
  2. Boost up water level in skin
  3. Build up the skin’s protective barrier

The efficacy of Lumorol and Sebumol series is dependent on its application. The following table portrays the efficacy of Lumorol and Sebumol series in different applications.

Shower Oil

  • Water-free cleansing oil becomes feasible
  • Easy to use
  • Control penetration of pollutants into the skin
  • Turns into a white foaming emulsion during shower

  • Does not leave any sticky feeling on skin and provide excellent emulsifying effect

LUMOROL K 5229 - Dead Sea Salt & Oil Body Scrub


  1. Combine A and heat up to approx. 85-90 °C and if melted homogenize.
  2. Add B to A and homogenize until getting a homogeneous mixture.
  3. If necessary heat up again.
  4. Cool down to approx. 40 °C whilst stirring and at the same time add the other components of part C.

Final Product Appearance: Translucent, High Viscous Gel, with Salt Particles.


SEBUMOL WO 300 - Weather Cream & Pollution Protection


  1. Combine A and heat up to minimum 76°C whilst stirring.
  2. Combine B and heat up to approx. 75 °C whilst stirring.
  3. Add B in small portions to A whilst stirring and wait until the mixture has a uniform, white appearance.
  4. Homogenize AB for about 1-2 minutes.
  5. Cool down AB whilst stirring to approx. 40 °C. Add C and stir to homogeneity.
  6. Cool down ABC whilst stirring to approx. 35 °C. After reaching 35 °C do not stir anymore and let cool down to room temperature without stirring. Do not homogenize at the end.

Final Product Appearance: White soft cream.


LUMOROL K 5229 – Shower Oil


Final Product Appearance: Clear Yellow Liquid.
