Non-Isocyanate Acrylic Resins For 2k Coatings

Non-Isocyanate Acrylic Resins For 2K Coatings: The Future of Eco-Friendly Protective Finishes

Isocyanates are a family of highly reactive, low molecular weight chemicals. They are widely used in the manufacture of coatings such as paints and varnishes, and elastomers, and are increasingly used in the automobile industry, autobody repair, and building insulation materials. Spray-on polyurethane products containing isocyanates have been developed for a wide range of retail, commercial, and industrial uses to protect concrete, wood, plastics, and metals.

HEALTH RISK OF ISOCYANATES

Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can also sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again. There is evidence that both respiratory and dermal exposures can lead to sensitization. Death from severe asthma in some sensitized subjects has been reported. Workers potentially exposed to isocyanates who experience persistent or recurring eye irritation, nasal congestion, dry or sore throat, cold-like symptoms, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest tightness should see a physician knowledgeable in work-related health problems.

NON-ISOCYANATE COATINGS

Non-Isocyanate acrylic resin (NISO) are amine/acid functional acrylic cross-linked with an aliphatic epoxy. It gives many of the advantages of polyurethane but without the respiratory hazard associated with isocyanates. 2K NISO system consists of a base of multifunctional acrylic, amine, acid, and OH, it is similar to the polyol in standard OH acrylic or polyester 2K urethane system. While the hardener is an epoxy-functional acrylic

SYNOCURE 886 S 70

Arkema’s SYNOCURE 886 S 70 is an acid-functional acrylic resin designed to cross-link at ambient temperatures with epoxy resins to give high solids content isocyanate-free two-pack coating systems. The coating based on this resin is especially suitable for protection and maintenance in areas where rapid drying, hardness, and abrasion resistance are required. SYNOCURE 886 S 70 has been designed to react with economic bisphenol, a type of epoxies, and still maintain good exterior durability and fast drying. Coating with VOC at or below 420 g/L at application viscosity can be formulated with this product too. Low-viscosity epoxy resins of an epoxy equivalent weight of 180 – 190 are used as hardeners. A stoichiometric mixing ratio of 1/1 to 1.25 / 1 epoxy / active hydrogen equivalents is recommended although minor deviations from this will have little effect on performance.
