Reducing VOC In Solvent-Borne Alkyd Paints Using Chemnol 318

During recent years, the interest in using solvent-based alkyd paints has increased. They are used primarily in the decorative and protective industry, especially in stains and primers for exterior use.  One significant problem of using solvent-borne alkyd paints is their high volatile organic compounds emissions,  leading to stricter regulations on their use in certain regions. With public awareness and the industry showing higher responsibility towards the environment, alkyd emulsions with lower volatile organic compounds have been gaining attention.

EMULSIFIER IN SOLVENT-BASED ALKYD PAINTS

Emulsifiers are used in solvent-based alkyd paints to stabilize the mixture and prevent separation. They help maintain the homogeneity of the paint, improve the application properties, and enhance the durability of the film. The choice of emulsifier depends on various factors such as the intended application and desired properties of the paint film. A recent study shows the emulsifier can also serve as a volatile organic compound reducer in solvent-borne paint by promoting the inclusion of water to replace part of the organic solvents in the paint formulation

CHEMNOL 318 EMULSIFIER IN REDUCING VOC

Chemnol-318 is Sauradip’s new and environmentally friendly film-forming polysaccharide emulsifier, formulated to improve incorporation of water into solvent-borne alkyd paints. By adding Chemnol 318 into the formulation, 10% of the organic solvent can be replaced with water without causing any significant change in the performance. It can further substitute 20-30% of the solvent with minor effect on the viscosity and gloss of the paint. Subsequently, the volatile organic compounds coming from the organic solvent and overall cost can be reduced.

Chemnol 318 prevents the development of cracks in the film by forming hydrogen bonds with the alkyd to prevent evaporation of the water. This results in a harder film due to molecular interactions with the alkyd, aiding the formation and stabilization of the water-in-oil emulsion.

ADVANTAGES OF USING CHEMNOL 318

Chemnol 318 is an effective water-in-oil emulsifying agent for adding water into solvent-based alkyds. The product enables water loading up to 20-30% and can be added in the let-down stage. Chemnol 318 benefits from significant cost reduction and has equivalent paint performance such as drying time, gloss and film properties. Furthermore, it has no adverse impact on stability and shelf life of paint. See table 1 on Chemnol 318 performance results.
